What Supergirl Did Next... Out Now

Jade is a girl who knows what she wants. She knows how to get it too. But when a sexist remark gets her blood boiling, Jade fights back with all she has.

Thalia says: 'A book about a girl who races a guy? I could read (or write) this story over and over! It really strikes a chord with me.

'I think maybe it stems from growing up in the modern world, where girls are told we can be anything, do anything. As we grow up, though,  the physical differences between genders are obvious – especially in sport.

'In the back of my mind, this book is also for the feminist movers and shakers of the past – from the blue stockinged suffragettes to the sixties feminists. I often wonder what they think of today’s women and girls – what do they think of the choices we are making? I can see why they might be disappointed about some things. I guess this is my answer to their disappointment – that in many ways the gender issues still exist for everyone, guys and girls alike, and that in the end, all we have is each other.

'The seed of the idea was very much the race between a girl and a guy, and using that to explore gender issues. As I was writing, though, Jade’s relationship with her mum and her sister became really important to her journey. I think it’s because these gender issues (ie ‘women fighting for their rights’) are also about how women treat each other – how our mothers influence us, and how we react when our friends make different choices than our own. I find it interesting that an idea that was meant to be about gender conflict became so much about female relationships.'
